Stretch Yourself and Face Your Fears
March, 2007
We are all afraid of failure. The difference between
those who
succeed and those who don’t is the first group keeps
on trying. They don’t hide in their comfort zone. If one
path isn’t working,
a new one is discovered. They learn from their
journey. They still feel fear, but they aren’t
controlled by it.
Remember good ol’ Abe Lincoln? He is revered as
one of our great presidents. Here was his road to
presidential success:
- 1832- Lost job and defeated for state
legislature
- 1833- Failed in business
- 1838- Defeated for House Speaker
- 1846- Elected to Congress
- 1848- Lost renomination
- 1854- Defeated for US Senate
- 1856- Defeated for nomination for Vice
President
- 1858- Defeated for US Senate
- 1860- Elected President of the United States
Let Lincoln’s path be our lesson. We are all afraid
of taking risks. Whether you are afraid of
reclaiming
your life
as an individual outside of motherhood, afraid of
failing at the work/life
balance, afraid that your children will fail without your
constant influence, or afraid of anything else that is
holding you
back, remind yourself that sometimes you need to
feel
the fear and do it anyway. Know that challenges on
your journey are part of the process and think of them
as whispers to help you learn along the way.
In order to grow, you must stretch yourself. In order
to stretch yourself,
you must face your fears. So take some risks,
embrace
those unexpected outcomes along the way, and know
that success
is right around the corner!
